The slaughter of 183 Texas heroes at an old mission fort in San Antonio in the spring of 1836 sparked a series of events that changed Texas and Texans forever. Upon his victory at the Alamo, General Santa Anna ordered his army to drive all Anglos from the northern Mexican territory and torch their farms and ranches. Almost thirty thousand people, mostly women, children and the elderly fled their homes for safety beyond Texas' border just hours ahead of an army bent on their annihilation.
But there were some left behind. A thirteen-year-old boy and his seven-year-old sister suddenly find themselves alone in the Texas frontier wilderness. Andy Bristow must find a way to protect his sister in a land that Comanches roamed for centuries and is now being destroyed by the Mexican Army.
Trail of Hope is an action-packed story of the culture clashes in early Texas and a brother's love, loyalty and promises made, regardless of the odds.

Trail of Hope is outside my usual reading preferences. However, I saw the book advertised on Twitter, and the subject intrigued me. I was pleasantly surprised. At first sight the book appears to be a Western, and in a way it is. But forget John Wayne. This is a historical novel, a story woven around actual events. Set in the late 1830s to 1841, straight after the Alamo, and in the same area, Andy and his little sister Rosie are taken by Comanches. While Andy suffers at the hands of the Indians, Rosie fares differently. Andy swears to find his sister, and the story follows his search.
The author appears to be an expert in the Comanche way of life, or has done extensive research. We have a rare insight into the lives of 19th century native Americans. I particularly liked the way he trained his horse, Prince, the way he had learned from the People. I felt that even I could do it! I was fascinated too by the way Comanche braves ride hanging off the horse to one side. I've seen it in films, but I did not know they did it for real! I don't think I could try that one!
All in all a fascinating read. I enjoyed the story, I enjoyed the characterisation, and I laughed once or twice. Most of all I enjoyed learning about the Comanches.

Trail of Hope Texas Legacy Family Saga Book 2 edition by Dan Vanderburg Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed reading this as much as the first one, Legacy of Dreams, this story takes up where the first one left off. I recommend both books for a good read and great story.
This is my favorite Vanderburg book. The story is fast moving and the characters are very believable. This book and its subject matter captured my attention and my emotions. I would highly recommend it.
Dan does a great job of exposing the harsh realities the early Texas settlers faced. The characters are well developed and the story has a good pace. I appreciate Dan for not using offensive language and the book can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. I hope to read his other books now that I have finished this one. If you like "Trail of Hope" you might also enjoy "The Boy Captives" and "Taming the Nueces Strip The Story of McNelly's Rangers."
